Krill oil is widely spread omega-3 rich food supplement. Krill oil and oceanic fish oil are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, mainly eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), however, in krill oil, these valuable fatty acids are bound mostly to phospholipids (PLs) with increased bioavailability. Krill oil also contains choline-containing phospholipids and a phosphatidylcholine concentration of 34 % of oil as well as very powerful antioxydant astaxanthin. Orochem technologies Inc. developed a novel continuous chromatography process for refination of ethanolic Krill oil extracts (US 9556116) by combining the ion exchange and SMB technologies. The technology we introduced produces high quality Krill oil essentially free (sub ppm) of salts, heavy metals and trimethyamine (N)-oxyde (TMAO), while preserving the content of PLs, omega-3 fatty acids and astaxanhin unaltered.
